Last week I promised that you can now paint your kitchen cabinets without sanding first. So now I owe you the process and reveal.
Let me do a little recap for you. I found a little kit at Home Depot called Cabinet Transformations by Rustoleum thanks to an ad in one of the many magazines I now have time to read. This kit promises that you can transform your kitchen (and other products) in just four (count them-four) easy steps with (wait for it!) no sanding or stripping required! (Scroll below to see the original post)
You see, a designer friend of mine recommended that I start my much needed kitchen makeover with painting my island black. Yep, that’s right ladies, black. Here’s the catch. I don’t sand anything. You can add that to the many things I actually don’t do home-wise, but that’s right up there at the top. I don’t have the patience for it and it’s a complete mess. No thanks.
This kit promises you can paint on a new factory-perfect finish quickly. Well, I don’t know about the “quickly” part. I actually took my time ( 6 or 7 days maybe?) so not to screw it up. But it was very, very easy. I told you before that if you can use a rag and a paint brush, you can conquer this task.
First let me remind you of the before photo:
Step 1
Take off doors and hardware (just a screwdriver required here). You do not want to try this with them still attached. Set doors up on sawhorses if you have them. I borrowed my neighbor’s and I’m sure he now appreciates the small drops of black paint on them. PLEASE NOTE: This is what I call the no-brainer step but isn’t actually included as part of the “four step” process, hence the reason I have 5 steps.
Step 2
Use the “deglosser” can and the scrub pad (both provided included in kit) to wipe down every square inch (and I mean every) of what you are planning on painting. Warning! I missed a couple of spots initially and the paint didn’t stick.
Step 3
Take a good paintbrush (the cheap ones lose their bristles in your paint- trust me on this) and paint the entire piece, including the doors with the paint included (they call it the “bond coat”) included in the kit. PLEASE NOTE: there are 11 light hues and 24 dark hues available, and Home Depot tinted the paint (aka “bond coat”) in the kit for me. It comes with 2 cans, which supposedly can paint up to 100 square feet. Just fyi, I only used one can.
Step 4
Dip a rag (provided in kit) in the can of “glaze” (provided in kit) over an area, then wipe off extra. PLEASE NOTE: this step is optional. The glaze can be left on heavy or can be taken off for a “lighter” approach. Me? I like to do everything with a bang, so I LEFT ALL THE GLAZE ON! Aren’t I the risk taker!?
Step 5
Take a paint brush and apply the final coat (provided in kit) in it’s entirety. PLEASE NOTE: there are drying times listed for each step that you will want to follow! I highly recommend doing all pieces in the same step order. So, don’t do three steps of the island and then do two steps on the doors. This whole process took me 6-7 days but could be done faster. I just had to take care of my cute 6 month old in the middle of all this mess.
Ta Da! The Great Reveal!
Don’t forget to paint the outlet covers! I did this with basic black spray paint. Here is the link for you for the kit which includes full instructions! PLEASE NOTE: Mine is just an overview but you get the idea!

That turned out great. Our kitchen cabinets are light (beige), now, but we want to paint them white so they fit with the rest of the house. But paints like Rustoleum can’t be bought here
You are kidding. Where on earth do you live?
I wonder if you can order it online? Maybe you could use Kilz on them and then paint them with regular paint? I’ve been reading about girls doing that too?

Looks Great!! Can the cabinet transformations be used on cabinets that are already painted? Mine were painted years ago and I would love something updated and this may be perfect if it can be used on already painted wood.
Hey Holly! Not sure but I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t work based on the steps I went through. They give you a can of “deglosser” to rub over the area so the paint will stick. I think I’ve heard of other people using kilz to paint their cabinets?
I suggest calling Rustoleum and asking them if it’s possible. My cabinets were painted white, so I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t work on painted, painted cabinets, but what do I know?

I’ve wanted to make over my cabinets and this looks awesome! Does the paint seem like it is holding up well or will scratch easily? I think I will start with my island…hmmm now what color do I do? Thanks!
Hey! Thanks Stacey! So far, no scratches! I’m going to go back and add one more coat to darken her up a bit and then add some poly. So hopefully that will keep her long term.
Let me know if you do it too! By the way, I’m a fan of Real Southern Living! Your place is so cooooooooool! Thanks for linking up your No Sew project. So incredible!

Thanks for this post. I’ve been considering using this exact product to paint my island black. And I don’t like to sand either. My kitchen is about halfway ? finished, one step at time….
Yep, I hear ya! One step at a time for me too! It’s hard some days b/c I want to get it all done!
